It was not only that one of their objectives in fighting a war against Iraq was achieved, but they also thought that it would end the physical resistance and guerrilla warfare on the part of some Iraqi groups. It is, however, a mistake to assume that the capture of Saddam Hussein will automatically finish the guerrilla war against the Americans. That assumption is wrong because it has been far from clear all along that the guerrillas were really led by Saddam Hussein and that their effectiveness depended very much on Saddam’s leadership. Oleh Sayidiman Suryohadiprojo KETIKA Saddam Hussein tertangkap, pemerintah dan tentara Amerika bergembira sekali dan memperkirakan bahwa hal itu akan membawa berakhirnya perlawanan bersenjata rakyat Irak. Pikiran demikian timbul akibat pandangan salah tentang gerilya. Seakan-akan perlawanan gerilya akan selesai kalau pemimpinan ditangkap atau dibunuh. Padahal juga belum jelas dan pasti bahwa Saddam Hussein yang memimpin perlawanan rakyat. Dulu pemerintah dan tentara Belanda membuat kesalahan serupa ketika dalam serangannya ke Yogyakarta tanggal 18 Desember 1948 berhasil menawan Presiden Soekarno, Wakil Presiden Mohamad Hatta, dan hampir seluruh kabinet RI. Mereka juga mengira bahwa keberhasilan mereka itu akan mengakhiri perlawanan TNI dan rakyat Indonesia.
